School of Islamic Studies
Department of Modern Arabic
Arabic is the official language of more then 18 Arab countries besides
being one of the six languages of the UNO. Above all, it is the language
of Holy Quran. It has assumed special importance in the contemporary
world. A couple of decades back students who chose Arabic as an elective
did it to read its literature or facilitate touring in the Arab countries.
Today, the story is different. It promises lucrative employment
opportunities. It is therefore, no surprise that enrolment in U. S Colleges
in Arabic courses registered 92% increase between 1998 and 2002. Following
9/11 and the Iraq war the demand has doubled not only in U. S but elsewhere
too.
The Masters programme in Arabic has been so conceived that
the students master Arabic language and read its rich literature. Courses
have also been devised to impart teaching in English and use of Computers.
The latter two innovations are unique to the Arabic programme of this
University. They are aimed at improving employability of the students.

Translation from one language to another has
been in practice for centuries. Hundreds of literary works of
different world languages have been translated into Arabic and

into small village and increased the importance of translation
manifold. Oil boom in the Arab world and some recent incidents
have increased the need of Arabic translators many times more.
There are hundreds of jobs awaiting competent Arabic-English
translators. In view of this the Department has designed
specialized diploma courses which will prepare students to
undertake journalistic, academic and documentary translation. They
will also be trained to use Arabic software. The diploma is of six
months duration and carries 24 credits. The course structure will
be as follows:
AET-1: Arabic-English Translation-I
AET-2: Arabic-English Translation-II
AET-3: English-Arabic-Translation-I
AET-4: English-Arabic Translation II
AET-5: Oral Expression in Arabic

Diploma in Spoken

English has become an international language
for interaction. In the contemporary world every kind of knowledge
is in this language. Therefore, students of other disciplines need
to learn English. The Madrasa alumni have either no knowledge or
have very little knowledge of English with the result they cannot
exploit the information resources available in English. To help
them to stand in the contemporary world and build confidence in
them so that they can at least communicate with rest of the world
the Department has designed a bridge course in English. It has
been designed to acquaint the students with applied English
grammar and give them training to read, write and speak English
fluently. The diploma is of six months duration and carries 24
credits. The course structure is as follows:
SE 1: Applied English Grammar I
SE 2: Applied English Grammar-II
SE 3: Selected English Readings 1
SE 4: Selected English Readings-II
SE 5: Oral Expression in English
SE 6: Composition and Précis writing
