Department of Arabic

Arabic is among the few languages of the world that entered new land and became its mother language and remains so till date. Around 1798, the Arab world came in touch with Europe. Following interaction with French and English languages and cultures Arabic language developed many fold. It adopted all forms of prose and poetry, short story writing, drama, novel and free verse poetry. Today, everything that is found in world literature exists in Arabic literature as well. Many Arabic dramas, short stories, novels and poetry have been translated into different world languages which are considered as world literary assets. Gibran Khalil Gibran, Taufiq al-Hakeem and Naguib Mehfooz were awarded Nobel Prize for their contributions to Arabic literature for which they are known world over.

Arabic is a living language of the world. It is the official language of 18 Arab countries, fourth language of the world and sixth language of UNO. The Oil boom in 1920 converted the Arabian Desert into a golden hen. It became a heaven for people from all over the world looking for earning quick buck. Keeping in view huge potential of the language, the Department of Arabic was started in 2005. B.A (Hons.) programme was introduced in 2009.
