Our Chancellor, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad , the Chief
Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State was born in March 1949 at Village
Soti (Bhallesa), Tehsil Gandoh and District Doda. He had his M.Sc
Zoology from Kashmir University in 1972. He joined politics in 1973
when he was elected as Block Secretary of Congress Committee Bhallesa.
In 1975, Mr Azad was nominated as president of Jammu and Kashmir
Pradesh Youth Congress. In 1977, he was appointed as President of
Congress Committee Doda district. During this year, he was nominated
as General Secretary of All India Youth Congress. Besides this, from
1978 to 81 he remained the President of All India Muslim Youth
Conference. He was nominated as Member of Congress Working Committee
in 1986 and nominated as General Secretary of AICC in 1987 and elected
as General Secretary for nine times.
Mr. Azad was inducted as Union Deputy Minister for
Company Affairs and Law in 1982 and later took over as Minister of
State in this Ministry. In 1985, he was again elected as Member
Parliament from Washim Constituency and was inducted as Minister of
State for Home Affairs and later given Food and Civil Supplies
portfolio. In 1990, Mr Azad was elected as Rajya Sabha Member and in
1991, he was inducted as Cabinet Minister for Parliamentary Affairs
and later given Tourism and Civil Aviation portfolio. He was made
President of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee under whose guidance
Assembly elections in 2002, Congress bagged 21 seats and thus became
the second largest party in Assembly.
Mr. Azad was Union Minister for Urban Development
and Law & Parliamentary Affairs in present Dr. Manmohan Singh UPA
Government. He took over as 10th Chief Minister of J&K State and 2nd
Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah university on November 2, 2005.
